Arriving by sea, they settled the continent and had formed approximately 250 distinct language groups by the time of European settlement, maintaining some of the longest known continuing artistic and religious traditions in the world. Ace of spades faridah abike iyimide7/4/2023 Yet, I do want to get the (read: major) critiques off my chest before I start going into the good because I think it’s worth discussing before a deep dive, which may be a little more spoilery. The very short sum of my thoughts – I really enjoyed the experience of this book when taking it as a whole. There’s much to unpack from my experience of reading Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé’s debut YA dark academia thriller “Ace of Spades”. Enough to break the character review limit on here? Quite possibly and for a different reason than you might think. The comparison of the story being “Gossip Girl” meets “Get Out” is quite accurate, though I would throw in “Pretty Little Liars” as well.ĭo I have a lot of thoughts about this book? Yes, yes I do. I enjoyed the ride, and I think it sets a precursor for strong Black Dark Academia stories. Initial reaction: There are some critiques I would give about unanswered questions that are prominent in this book, but overall – this journey held my attention and didn’t let go.

(Copied from CCEL, which also hosts the downloadable ebook). A fine place to start before diving into her more intense works, Practical Mysticism has captivated generations of readers, and is still the premier text for the introductory study of mysticism. Augustine, and Thomas a Kempis, and examples from these writers, as well as poets like Keats and Whitman, are sprinkled throughout the book. Whether exploring the history of the female nude or the status of oil paint, his landmark series showed how art revealed the social and political systems in which it was made. According to James Bridle, Berger "didn't just help us gain a new perspective on viewing art with his 1972 series Ways of Seeing – he also revealed much about the world in which we live. The series was intended as a response to Kenneth Clark's Civilisation TV series, which represents a more traditionalist view of the Western artistic and cultural canon, and the series and book criticise traditional Western cultural aesthetics by raising questions about hidden ideologies in visual images.
